Known issues on the 2004 Prius. Two recalls sit on the federal record for this model year. The first covers the brake light switch: a silicon oxide build-up occurs on the contacts inside the switch, which can make it inoperable, and if the switch is inoperable the brake lights will not illuminate. The second, part of a Toyota action covering model year 2004 through 2010 passenger vehicles, covers the accelerator pedal, which can get stuck in the wide open position; a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. NHTSA has recorded 737 owner complaints against the 2004 Prius, and Toyota has issued 129 technical service bulletins for it.
Both campaigns are on record under their own NHTSA numbers, 04V558000 for the brake light switch and 09V388000 for the accelerator pedal, so a specific VIN can be checked against each one before assuming either was remedied.
