Known issues on the 2004 A6. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two cover the fuel tank rollover valve: aging plastic combined with bending stress from the aluminum ventilation line can crack the valve nipple, and a resulting fuel leak near an ignition source can lead to a vehicle fire. Two more cover the headlight switch wiring: connector pins in the switch can short circuit, and separately the switch wiring harness can be contacted through the dashboard knee bolster, either of which risks overheating or a fire originating in the left dashboard area. ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, IF A DRIVER'S KNEES PUSH AGAINST THE KNEE BOLSTER (CRASH ELEMENT) LOCATED UNDER THE DASHBOARD, IT CAN CONTACT THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WIRING HARNESS, AND AN ELECTRICAL SHORT COULD OCCUR.
Consequence
A FIRE COULD ORIGINATE IN THE LEFT DASHBOARD AREA.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVERING ON THE KNEE BOLSTER (CRASH ELEMENT). IN ADDITION, THE WIRING HARNESS AS WELL AS THE FELT PROTECTOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD CARRIER WILL BE CHECKED
