This factory service and repair manual for the 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is shared by three very different V8s: a 6.6L turbocharged diesel of 403 cubic inches, a naturally aspirated 6.0L gasoline V8 of 364 cubic inches and a naturally aspirated 8.1L gasoline V8 of 496 cubic inches, all overhead-valve. They were fitted to a 4-door crew cab pickup, a 4-door extended cab pickup and a 2-door standard cab pickup in SL, SLE and SLT trim. Procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics are split by system so the diesel and the two gasoline engines never get mixed up.

Known issues on the 2001 Sierra 2500 HD. Seven recalls are on the federal record. One is specific to the 8.1L V8, whose crankshaft position sensor can behave intermittently or fail completely, so the engine runs rough, stalls, and may not restart. Another covers parking brake friction linings that wear until a parked truck can roll. A third covers antilock brakes that can activate when they should not, lengthening low-speed stops in areas where salt corrosion is common. Owners have filed 591 complaints, 299 on the service brakes, then engine and cooling and the fuel system. Sensor, brake and antilock diagnostics are all set out here.
