The 1999 Toyota Tacoma was built around three engines — the 2.4L 2RZ-FE and 2.7L 3RZ-FE four-cylinders and the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE) — and the service figures diverge across all three, so the clearances and torque values you work to are the ones Toyota published for this year and this drivetrain rather than for an adjacent model year that happens to look the same.

Known issues on the 1999 Tacoma. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, and two of them concern exterior lighting fitted after the truck left the factory. One covers 42,540 combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies of various part numbers sold as aftermarket equipment by DOPE, Inc. for various passenger vehicles; the other covers 16,270 combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold the same way by Sabersport. The consequence recorded for both is the same: decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. The third is a trailer hitch recall covering trailer towing wire harness converters installed by dealers or for installation on 1999-2000 Toyota Tundra and Tacoma vehicles, where an electrical short or open circuit can cause a fault in the converter. Owners have filed 303 complaints against the 1999 Tacoma and Toyota has issued 54 technical service bulletins for it. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
From tracing an exterior lighting fault or a trailer-converter short to a scheduled service on the 3.4L V6, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the specification Toyota published for this 1999 Tacoma.
