The 1998 Tacoma was sold with three engines, and the figures in this service and repair manual follow whichever one is in the truck: the 2.4L four (2RZ-FE), the 2.7L four (3RZ-FE) or the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE). Clearances, torque values and tightening sequences are the ones Toyota published for this year and this engine, not a number carried over from an adjacent model year.

Known issues on the 1998 Tacoma. Three recalls sit on the federal record for this model year, and two of them are aftermarket equipment campaigns rather than Toyota vehicle recalls. The first is filed under exterior lighting and headlights: DOPE, Inc. recalled 42,540 combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies of various part numbers sold for use as aftermarket equipment on various passenger vehicles. The second is filed under exterior lighting: Sabersport recalled 16,270 lamp assemblies of the same description. In both, decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. The third is filed under air bags and the on-off switch assembly, and concerns the statement the owner's manual is required to carry, that the on-off switch should only be used when a member of a passenger risk group is in the seat; the case it addresses is the switch being left off for a seat occupant who is not a member of that group. Owners have filed 358 complaints against the 1998 Tacoma, and 56 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
From a corner-lamp circuit that will not behave to an air bag system check or a torque figure on the 3.4L V6, the procedures here are the ones Toyota wrote for your specific 1998 Tacoma.
