Known issues on the 1997 Lumina. Two recalls stand on the federal record. One is a steering fault: retainer tabs on the lower pinion bearing in the power rack and pinion were not crimped properly, and if the retainer fails the ball bearings escape, letting the pinion shaft ride upward under cornering loads until the wheel takes far more effort to turn than it should. The other covers replacement fuel pressure regulators built without an O-ring and retainer, where leaking fuel can ignite. Steering also leads the 371 complaints with 88, ahead of 50 on engine and cooling and 45 on the fuel system.
