This factory service and repair manual for the 1996 Chevrolet Lumina covers a four-door sedan in Base and LS trim with a choice of two naturally aspirated V6s: 189 cubic inches with overhead valves, or 207 cubic inches with twin overhead cams, both on gasoline. Because those engines share a single car rather than a family of bodies, most of the manual applies to every example. The driveline, brake, steering, suspension and electrical sections are written once, and only the engine chapters split.

Known issues on the 1996 Lumina. Three recalls are recorded federally, two of them on the brakes. The left front brake line can rub against the transaxle mounting bracket or its bolt until it wears through, and the fluid loss that follows takes out half the braking system. Separately, a brake booster tab not properly located in the dash reinforcement leaves the booster poorly supported exactly when a short stop is needed. The third covers replacement fuel pressure regulators that leak for want of a sealing ring. Complaints total 270 — 37 on engine and cooling, 35 on service brakes, 32 on air bags.
THE LEFT FRONT BRAKE LINE CAN CONTACT THE TRANSAXLE MOUNTING BRACKET OR ATTACHMENT BOLT.
Consequence
THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE BRAKE LINE TO WEAR THROUGH, RESULTING IN LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLE FOR PROPER BRAKE LINE CLEARANCE AND REPOSITION THOSE BRAK
