This factory service and repair manual for the 1989 GMC K2500 spans three configurations, standard cab pickup, extended cab pickup and cab & chassis, and the four engines that could be ordered behind them: a 4.3L V6, a 5.0L V8 and a 5.7L V8 on gasoline, plus a 6.2L diesel V8. Sierra, Sierra SLE and Sierra SLX make up the trim list. All four engines are naturally aspirated overhead-valve units, so what separates them in the book is displacement, fueling and the torque figures that follow.

Known issues on the 1989 K2500. Three of the four recalls on the federal record describe fire or restraint hazards. Replacement oil filters sold for these trucks can seal badly and lose engine oil, which may ignite; unexpected heat in the transmission can push fluid out of the vent tube, where it can also catch; and some trucks carry wrong instructions for adjusting the rear lap-shoulder belts, so a belt set by them may not hold an occupant in a sudden stop. Owners have filed three complaints with NHTSA, one each on tires, service brakes and seat belts. Brake and restraint procedures and transmission specifications cover that ground.
