Known issues on the 2016 A3. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the passenger occupant classification sensor: the passenger occupant detection system can malfunction and switch off the front passenger air bag even when the seat is occupied, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. The second covers the frontal passenger-side air bag inflator module, which during deployment may explode or deploy improperly, sending sharp metal fragments toward occupants or failing to properly restrain them. The third covers the gasoline fuel system: a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank can fail, allowing fuel to flow into the evaporative emissions system and leak out of the charcoal canister, raising the risk of a fire near an ignition source.
