Known issues on the 2013 A3. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, and all three concern the driver's frontal air bag inflator module. The first, tied to a wider Volkswagen Group recall, warns that excessive internal pressure in the inflator could cause it to explode during deployment, sending metal fragments toward vehicle occupants and risking serious injury or death. The second describes the same failure as a rupture rather than an explosion, again from excessive internal pressure, with the same risk to the driver and other occupants. The third, covering diesel A3s previously repaired under an earlier Takata air bag recall, notes that the inflator may explode from propellant degradation after long-term exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling.
