Known issues on the 2008 A3. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, and all three trace to fuel and airbag safety systems. Two separate recalls cover the driver's frontal air bag inflator module: excessive internal pressure can cause the inflator to rupture or explode, sending metal fragments toward the driver and other occupants in a crash. The third covers the fuel tank ventilation valve, whose internal spring can fail to hold the valve closed under extreme driving conditions, allowing fuel to leak in the presence of an ignition source and creating a fire risk.
