Known issues on the 2009 A3. Five recalls are on federal record for this model year, all tied to Volkswagen Group's broader 2005-2013 platform. The driver's frontal air bag inflator is covered by two separate recalls, either of which could see the inflator explode or rupture on deployment, throwing metal fragments at occupants. A third recall covers the Antilock Brake System control unit, which can fail during ABS or Electronic Stability Control activation and cause a loss of vehicle control. A fourth covers the automatic transmission, where an insufficiently crimped temperature sensor connector can falsely read a high gearbox oil temperature and abruptly shift the car to neutral without warning. The fifth covers the fuel tank ventilation valve, whose internal spring can fail to hold the valve closed under extreme driving, allowing fuel to leak in the presence of an ignition source.
