Known issues on the 2005 Cooper. Two recalls are on the federal record for the 2005 Cooper. Certain 2005 Cooper vehicles could lose electro-hydraulic steering assist, temporarily or for good, leaving the driver to muscle the wheel at low speed. On certain others built within a stated production window, the occupant detection mat in the front passenger seat might misread the seat, so the passenger front air bag could stay off in a crash; dealers fit a new mat. Complaints total 843, led by steering at 600 and air bags at 134; 17 complaints reported a crash, 36 a fire, 6 an injury and 1 a death.
