Known issues on the 2003 Cooper. Two recalls appear on the federal record for the 2003 Cooper. Certain 2003 Cooper vehicles could suffer a temporary or lasting loss of electro-hydraulic steering assist, so low-speed maneuvers take extra effort. On certain others, covering 5,110 vehicles, the head of the lower screw fixing a rear strut to the chassis could snap, and if the rest of it broke later the body could settle onto the tire; dealers replaced that fastening. Of 535 owner complaints, 288 concern steering and 97 the power train, while 14 complaints reported a crash, 47 a fire, 10 an injury and 1 a death.
