Known issues on the 2001 A8 Quattro. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the automatic transmission: the shift-lock cable can move out of position over time, allowing the shifter to be moved out of Park even without the ignition key in the lock, which lets the vehicle roll and crash without warning. The second covers the fuel tank filler pipe and cap: the blind cover at the filler neck may not seal properly, letting fuel vapor escape and reducing fuel tank pressure enough to trigger the leak detection system and an instrument panel warning light. Remedy
DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LOCKING CABLE BY INSTALLING AN ADJUSTING PIECE THAT WILL SECURE THE LOCKING CABLE IN PLACE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT

Consequence
SHOULD THIS HAPPEN, THE FUEL TANK PRESSURE WILL BE REDUCED, WHICH WILL ACTIVATE THE LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM AND ALERT THE DRIVER OF A SYSTEM'S FAULT INDICATED BY AN INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHT.
Remedy
