Known issues on the 2021 A8 Quattro. Ten recalls sit on the federal record for this model year, and half of them concern what the driver can or cannot see. Four separate campaigns address the rearview camera: a software error that may prevent the rear-view image from initially displaying when the vehicle begins to reverse, a software issue that may put a blank or black screen up in place of the camera image when the car is placed in reverse, an infotainment main unit that may become damaged internally when the vehicle is shut off and leave the rearview camera display inoperative the next time the vehicle is started, and a further software error that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying as intended. In each case the driver's view behind the vehicle is reduced and the risk of a crash goes up. A fifth campaign covers the instrument panel display, which may fail due to a software error and stop showing critical safety information such as the speedometer or warning lights. On the mechanical side, the lock nut on the trailing arm of the rear axle may break due to stress corrosion, and a broken lock nut may misalign the rear axle, causing a loss of control; a follow-up recall covers cars whose rear axle alignment may not have been inspected after the repairs for that campaign were performed, where rear axle misalignment may cause premature or uneven tire wear. A missing sealing pin may allow moisture to enter the engine control module connector, and a control module malfunction may cause the engine to stall. The rear seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly and increases the risk of injury during a crash. And when the industrial 220V/240V plug is used at the 100% charge setting, some home power outlets may be incapable of handling the current required to utilize the compact charging system, causing the outlet or charging cable to overheat and increasing the risk of a fire. Whether the job is a dark camera display, a stall traced back to the engine control module connector, or a rear axle alignment check after the trailing arm lock nut, the work stays on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for this 2021 A8 Quattro.
