On certain 1992 Passat vehicles with the 16-valve engine and a particular emission-control package, the venturi tube pressed into the throttle valve housing could loosen and fall onto the throttle plate, stopping it from closing fully and producing unwanted engine speed once the car was put in gear. Dealers installed a threaded tube instead. The engine and engine cooling lead the 39 owner complaints at 17, ahead of the gasoline fuel system at 8 and power train and visibility at 7 apiece; 3 complaints reported a crash, 1 a fire and 1 an injury.
