Known issues on the 2000 Passat. For the 2000 Passat, NHTSA's list runs to 3 recalls. On certain 2000 Passat vehicles, sulfur from gasoline could build up on the contacts of the fuel level sending units in the tank, so the gauge might read full when the tank was low or empty. Certain 2000 Passat vehicles were also recalled for underbody heat shields on automatic-transmission cars built after a stated date, a fuel line on the turbocharged engine and a tank vent valve on AWD cars, any of which could lead to fire. Hydraulic brakes lead the 507 owner complaints at 160; 11 complaints reported a crash, 25 a fire, 10 an injury and 1 a death.
