This factory service and repair manual for the 1989 GMC K3500 is written around three overhead-valve engines and three body configurations. The engines are the 7.4L and 5.7L gasoline V8s and the 6.2L diesel V8; the bodies are the standard cab pickup, the extended cab pickup and the cab & chassis. Known issues on the 1989 K3500. Four recalls are attached to this model year, and three are worth stating plainly. Replacement oil filters sold for these trucks may not seal properly, so the engine can lose its oil and a fire can follow. The automatic transmission can force fluid out through the vent tube when it runs hotter than anticipated. And some trucks were supplied with incorrect instructions for adjusting the rear lap-shoulder belts, which can leave an occupant poorly restrained. One owner complaint, on the service brakes, is logged with NHTSA. Belt anchorage adjustment, transmission cooling checks and brake diagnostics each carry their own procedures and torque values in this manual.

UNANTICIPATED HEAT IN THE TRANSMISSION CAN FORCE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID OUT OF THE VENT TUBE.
Consequence
THE VENTED TRANSMISSION FLUID CAN CATCH FIRE IF EXPOSEDTO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.
