Known issues on the 2013 Beetle. Air bags account for 38 of the 99 owner complaints on the 2013 Beetle and the electrical system for 20; 4 complaints reported a crash and 1 an injury. The federal record shows 6 recalls. In certain 2013 Beetle vehicles, long exposure to heat and humidity could degrade the propellant in the driver air bag inflator until it bursts, sending out metal shards. On certain cars with automatic transmission, a manual handbrake and keyless entry, silicate deposits on a shift lever switch could free the key while the car was out of Park.
