Known issues on the 2002 Beetle. Air bags top the 180 owner complaints logged for the 2002 Beetle, with 44, followed by the electrical system at 39 and the power train at 31. Among the complaints, 13 reported a crash, 12 an injury and 4 a fire. The federal record also holds 3 recalls. In certain 2002 Beetle vehicles, a short inside the anti-lock brake control unit could start a fire, and dealers fitted a new unit. The other two involved certain cars whose brake light switch, if installed incorrectly, could stop working or keep the lamps on; one covered cruise-control cars whose switch may have been misinstalled during earlier recall repairs.
