Known issues on the 2012 XF. Five recalls are on federal record for this model year, and three of them concern the frontal air bag inflators. Two cover the passenger-side inflator module: in one, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants; in the other, an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. Either outcome can mean serious injury or death, and both recalls were issued by geographic zone, reaching cars originally sold, or ever registered, in a specified list of states and territories. The third covers the driver frontal air bag, which may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second stage deployment, so the second stage can deploy improperly in certain crashes, and an air bag that inflates improperly increases the risk of injury. A fourth applies to cars equipped with the 5.0L gasoline engine: the fuel tank fuel outlet flange may crack, and leaking fuel on the ground, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a vehicle fire. The fifth is a certification-label recall — the gross vehicle weight rating is stated incorrectly, so customers may unknowingly exceed the GVWR, which can lead to loss of vehicle stability and increase the risk of a crash. Owners have logged 38 complaints for the year.
