Known issues on the 2009 XF. Six recalls are on federal record for this model year, and four of them sit in the air bag system. Three cover the passenger frontal inflator module: in one, an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, and in the other two an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. The fourth covers the driver frontal air bag, which may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second stage deployment, so the second stage can deploy improperly in certain crashes, and an air bag that inflates improperly increases the risk of injury. A fifth covers the instrument cluster, where the speaker wires may fracture and the speaker ceases to operate, which silences the turn indicator, seat belt warning, lights-on warning, driver's door open with key in ignition, driver intervene on adaptive cruise control vehicles, and seat memory notifications; without the audible seat belt warning, drivers may neglect to wear their safety belt, increasing the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash. The sixth covers the rear safety belts, where the D-ring assembly may not rotate properly around the safety belt anchorage mounting bolt, so a seat occupant may not be properly restrained in a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury. Owners have submitted 90 complaints for the year.
