Known issues on the 2011 XF. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year, and three of them concern air bag inflators. The first covers the passenger frontal air bag inflator module, where an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death; it applies regionally, to 2011-2015 XF cars by where they were originally sold or ever registered. The second is also a passenger frontal inflator module, covering 2009-2011 XF vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. The third covers the driver frontal air bag, which may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second stage deployment, so that stage can deploy improperly in certain crashes; an air bag that inflates improperly increases the risk of injury. The fourth is a fuel system recall on 2010-2012 cars equipped with a 5.0L gasoline engine: the fuel tank fuel outlet flange may crack, and that leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a vehicle fire. Owners have filed 80 complaints for the year.
