Known issues on the 2004 Cayenne. Six recalls are on federal record for this model year. A transfer case housing casting defect can disrupt oil pump rotation and starve the internal gears, potentially fracturing the housing and misapplying torque to the driven wheels or leaking oil onto the tires. The rear seat belt latch attachment bolt was insufficiently riveted, risking improper occupant restraint in a crash. A bushing on the gear selector lever can allow the vehicle to move unexpectedly if exited without the transmission fully in Park. A fuel pump flange can crack and leak fuel near an ignition source, raising fire risk. The rear and front-passenger seat belt retractors can deactivate their automatic locking mode with certain child restraints, leaving the restraint improperly secured in a crash. And caps covering the low-beam headlight adjustment screws may be missing, allowing the headlights to fall out of proper adjustment. Owners have filed 101 complaints for the year.
