Known issues on the 2003 Miata. One recall is on federal record for this model year, and it covers the fog lights under exterior lighting. The socket holder in the fog lights is installed in the lamp casing using pressure, and during operation of the fog light the heat from the bulb can expand that socket holder and force it rearward; after it has been subjected to that expansion repeatedly, vibration during vehicle operation can separate the socket holder, the bulb holder and the wiring harness from the fog light casing. Should that occur, the bulb socket and the harness can drop inside the bumper and, possibly but rarely, the heat generated by the bulb can cause the bumper to burn. No owner complaints are logged with the federal database for this model year.
Beyond that lighting circuit, the 2003 car is a single-engine, single-body model, the 1.8L four in a two-door convertible, so the same year-correct figures apply whether the car in front of you is a Base, an SE, an LS or a Shinsen.
