Known issues on the 2002 Miata. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year, and both involve exterior lighting. The first covers replacement corner lamps, turn signals and headlights: some combination lamps are not equipped with amber side reflectors and so fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, and without those reflectors the vehicle is poorly illuminated, possibly resulting in a crash without warning. The second covers the fog lights, where the socket holder is held in the lamp casing by pressure; heat from the bulb expands the holder and forces it rearward, and after repeated expansion combined with vibration in service the socket holder, bulb holder and wiring harness can separate from the casing. Should that happen, the bulb socket and the harness can drop inside the bumper and, rarely, heat from the bulb can cause the bumper to burn. No owner complaints are logged for the year.
