Everything in this factory service and repair manual was written by Mazda around the 1990 Miata as it left the line, so the clearances, torque figures and adjustment sequences you work to are the ones tied to this year's engine and trim rather than a close approximation borrowed from a later car.

Known issues on the 1990 Miata. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first is logged under exterior lighting and covers certain Pro-A Motors corner lamps, turn signals and headlights sold as replacement lamps for use on these vehicles; some combination lamps that are not equipped with amber side reflectors fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, and without the amber reflectors the vehicle will be poorly illuminated, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash without warning. The second is logged under an unspecified component and covers a hardtop hoist accessory kit sold to customers who have the Miata with a hardtop: the plastic buckles used to adjust strap tension can break after the hardtop has been suspended by the hoist, and the hardtop can fall from the hoist, causing personal injury to anyone standing beneath or near it when it falls. Owners have logged 3 complaints for the year. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind the lighting and body hardware involved are here.
Whether you are chasing a lighting fault, going over the convertible top and hardtop hardware, or working a scheduled interval, it holds you to the specification Mazda published for this 1990 Miata.
