Known issues on the 2001 Miata. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first is an exterior lighting recall covering corner lamps, turn signals and headlights sold as replacement lamps for these cars: some combination lamps are not equipped with amber side reflectors and fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, and without the amber reflectors the vehicle will be poorly illuminated, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash without warning. The second covers the fog lights, where the socket holder is installed in the lamp casing using pressure; heat from the bulb expands the socket holder and forces it rearward, and after repeated expansion combined with vibration during vehicle operation the socket holder, bulb holder and wiring harness can separate from the fog light casing, letting the bulb socket and harness drop inside the bumper where the heat generated by the bulb can, rarely, cause the bumper to burn. One complaint is on record for the year.
