Everything in this factory service and repair manual is written to the 1991 Mazda Miata as Mazda built it that year, matched to the engine and trims below, so the numbers you work to are the ones Mazda published for this car rather than figures carried in from an adjacent production year.

Known issues on the 1991 Miata. Three recalls are on federal record for this vehicle. One covers the hydraulic service brakes and their antilock circuit: a return fluid line of the front brake system is misconnected to a rear brake fluid return, so when the ABS system comes into use all the fluid from the front brakes goes to the rear brake system, and that total loss of fluid in the front brake system leads to increased stopping distances and could result in a vehicle collision. A second covers a hardtop hoist accessory kit sold to customers who have the Miata with a hardtop: the plastic buckles used to adjust strap tension can break after the hardtop has been suspended by the hoist, resulting in the hardtop falling from the hoist and causing personal injury to anyone standing beneath or near it. The third covers exterior lighting on corner lamps, turn signals and headlights sold as replacement lamps, where some combination lamps are not equipped with amber side reflectors; without the amber reflectors the vehicle will be poorly illuminated, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash without warning. No owner complaints are on record for this vehicle. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures for each of those systems are here.
Brake work on the antilock circuit, a check of the front line routing, or routine service on the 1.6L four all run off Mazda's own numbers for the 1991 Miata.
