2002 Mazda Protege Service and Repair Manual
Fitment is the whole point of this one: the service and repair manual for the 2002 Mazda Protege is tied to this model year, its 2.0L four-cylinder and the sedan trims Mazda actually sold that season, so the clearance, torque value or sequence you read is the one Mazda published for this car and not a figure carried across from an adjacent year.

Known issues on the 2002 Protege. Four recalls are on federal record against this model year, and all four are lamp campaigns filed under exterior lighting. The first covers SaberSport combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold for use as aftermarket equipment; the lamps do not contain the required amber side reflectors, and decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. The second is filed under exterior lighting: headlights, and covers DOPE, Inc. combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold for use as aftermarket equipment, with the same missing amber side reflectors and the same decreased-visibility consequence. The third covers AlfaOtto combination headlamps sold as replacement lamps: without the amber reflectors the vehicle will be poorly illuminated, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash without warning. The fourth covers Tradesonic combination lamps sold as replacement lamps, where the lack of amber side reflectors in the lamps will decrease lighting visibility to other drivers and may possibly result in a vehicle crash. Owners have filed 100 complaints for the year.
From tracing a lamp or harness fault back to its source to a routine service on the 2.0L, it keeps you on Mazda's own procedure and the correct specification for your 2002 Protege.
