1998 Mazda Protege Service and Repair Manual

Known issues on the 1998 Protege. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the ignition switch on 1990-1998 Protege vehicles: the grease applied to the contact points inside the switch can become conductive and overheat, and an overheating ignition switch brings an increased risk of fire. The second is an equipment recall on 16,270 aftermarket combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold for various passenger vehicles; the lamps lack the amber side reflectors required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, and the decreased lighting visibility that results may lead to a crash. Owners have filed 47 complaints for the year. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
Whether the job is tracing a stubborn electrical fault back to the ignition switch, checking the corner and bumper lamps, or working a scheduled service on the 1.5L or 1.8L four, it keeps you on Mazda's own procedure and the right specification for this 1998 Protege.
