Known issues on the 1997 Protege. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the ignition switch: grease applied to the contact points inside the switch may become conductive and overheat, and if the ignition switch overheats there is an increased risk of a fire. It reached a wide span of Mazda vehicles, the 1990-1998 Protege among them. The second is an exterior lighting recall on aftermarket combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies, which do not contain the required amber side reflectors and so fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108; the decreased lighting visibility that results may lead to a vehicle crash. Owners have filed 77 complaints for the year. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
Whether you are testing a suspect ignition switch circuit, chasing an exterior lighting fault, or working through a service interval on the 1.5L or 1.8L four, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for your 1997 Protege.
