Known issues on the 1996 Protege. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the ignition switch: grease applied to the contact points inside the switch may become conductive and overheat, and if the ignition switch overheats there is an increased risk of a fire. Mazda North American Operations recalled certain 1990-1998 Protege vehicles under that action, alongside the MPV, 323, MX-3, 929, MX-6 and 626. The second is an exterior lighting recall on combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold as aftermarket equipment for various passenger vehicles; they do not contain the required amber side reflectors and fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, and decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. NHTSA lists 82 owner complaints for the 1996 Protege.
From an ignition switch that runs hot to a corner lamp that misses the federal reflector standard, or a routine service interval on the 1.5L or 1.8L, you stay on Mazda's own procedure and the correct specification for your 1996 Protege.
