Known issues on the 1995 Protege. Five recalls are on federal record for this model year. One covers the ignition switch: the grease applied to the contact points inside the switch can become conductive and overheat, and an overheating ignition switch brings an increased risk of fire. A second covers the engine valve springs, where the wire rod used to make them can develop minute cracks that break the springs, causing engine chatter, damage to the engine pistons and stalling, increasing the potential for an accident. A third covers the air bags: tie-down hooks can cause undercarriage impacts that result in unnecessary air bag deployments, and inadvertent deployment can injure occupants and increase the potential for a vehicle accident. A fourth covers the headlight switch, where the headlight lead wire running through the turn signal lever can fail at its soldered connection to the switch, and that failure can cause a loss of headlights without prior warning. The fifth is an equipment recall on aftermarket combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold for various passenger vehicles, which do not contain the amber side reflectors required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108; decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash.
