2001 Mazda Protege Service and Repair Manual
Fitment on this one is narrow by design: the 2001 Mazda Protege factory service and repair manual is keyed to this model year and to the 1.6L and 2.0L four-cylinder cars in the trims Mazda actually built, so the clearances, settings and repair sequences you work to are the ones Mazda published for this car and not approximations pulled from an adjacent model year.

Known issues on the 2001 Protege. Five recalls are on federal record for this model year, and four of them sit on exterior lighting rather than on anything Mazda fitted at the factory. Sabersport and DOPE, Inc. each recalled combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold as aftermarket equipment for passenger vehicles, while Alfaotto recalled combination headlamps and Tradesonic combination lamps, both sold as replacement lamps for passenger vehicles. In each case the lamps were not equipped with the amber side reflectors required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, and the decreased lighting visibility that results may lead to a crash. The fifth recall is on the car itself and covers the hydraulic service brake hoses: some left side rear brake hoses were damaged during assembly and brake fluid leakage could occur, which would degrade brake performance and increase the risk of a crash. Owners have filed 52 complaints against the 2001 Protege.
Whether you are chasing a soft pedal back to a leaking left rear brake hose, refitting a corner lamp assembly, or working a routine service interval, it holds you to Mazda's own procedure and specification for the 2001 Protege.
