Toyota fitted the 1997 Corolla with one of two four-cylinder engines, the 1.6L (4A-FE) or the 1.8L (7A-FE), and the two differ in more than displacement — service specifications and torque figures are called out separately for each, so the first thing to establish on any job is which engine is in the car in front of you.

Known issues on the 1997 Corolla. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year, and each one was filed against aftermarket or replacement equipment sold for the car rather than against a part fitted on the line. Three of the four concern exterior lighting. One covers aftermarket headlamps missing the amber side reflex reflector; without those reflectors, the lighting visibility may be affected. Two more cover combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold as aftermarket equipment, where decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. The fourth is a suspension recall on front strut mounts, where the absence of the weld can allow the strut to come out of its mounting position. Owners have filed 149 complaints against the 1997 Corolla, and 27 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
That history is worth carrying into the bay when a lighting fault appears after a corner lamp has been swapped, or when a front strut mount and its upper hardware come apart on the bench — both are jobs where working to Toyota's own specification for the 1997 Corolla, rather than a generic figure, decides whether the repair holds.
