The 2008 Toyota Corolla came with a single engine, the 1.8L four-cylinder (1ZZ-FE), in CE, LE and S trims. The figures in this factory service and repair manual are the ones Toyota published for that year, engine and trim combination, so the clearances and torque sequences you work to match the car in front of you rather than a neighboring Corolla year.

Known issues on the 2008 Corolla. Six recalls are on federal record for this model year, and four of them concern the passenger-side frontal air bag inflator module. One covers vehicles whose front passenger air bag assembly had been replaced, where an improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash. A second warns that an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. The remaining two, which also cover certain 2008-2010 Lexus SC vehicles, both describe the risk as arising in a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger’s frontal air bag. A fifth recall falls under engine and engine cooling and covers the engine control module on cars with the 1.8L engine and two-wheel drive; the record states only that there are a variety of warnings and consequences associated with the defect. The sixth, from Southeast Toyota, is a labeling defect — the vehicles did not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, Tire Selection and Rims — and a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash.
Owners have submitted 378 complaints against the 2008 Corolla, and 94 technical service bulletins have been issued for it. Whether the job is an inflator module replacement, an engine control module driveability fault or a routine service, the procedure and the torque figure you work to are Toyota’s own for this car.
