Every 2003 Toyota Corolla left the factory with the same engine — the 1.8L four-cylinder (1ZZ-FE) — fitted across the CE, LE and S trims in both automatic and standard-transmission form. Trim differences on this car are equipment differences rather than powertrain ones, so a torque figure or a clearance spec that is right for one 2003 Corolla is right across the range, provided it is the figure Toyota published for 2003 and not one carried over from an adjacent model year.

Known issues on the 2003 Corolla. Nine recalls are on federal record for this model year, six of them air bag campaigns. One covers the supplemental restraint system circuits, where inadvertent deployment of the airbags or the seat belt pretensioners may increase the risk of injury. Another covers cars whose front passenger air bag assembly had been replaced, where an improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash. Two more cover the passenger-side frontal inflator module, where an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. The remaining two concern the passenger's frontal air bag inflator in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of that bag. The other three are exterior lighting campaigns on replacement and aftermarket lamp assemblies sold for use on passenger vehicles: one on combination headlamp assemblies not equipped with amber side reflectors, without which the vehicle will be poorly illuminated, and two on combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies, where decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. Owners have filed 859 complaints against the 2003 Corolla and Toyota has issued 102 technical service bulletins for it.
An SRS warning traced back through the restraint circuits, a passenger air bag assembly that has already been replaced once, headlamp aim after a lamp swap — these are the jobs a 2003 Corolla actually turns up with, and each one goes faster when the procedure and the specification you are working to are the ones Toyota wrote for this car and this year.
