Known issues on the 2006 Corolla. Nine recalls are on federal record for this model year, and four of them are air bag recalls. Two are filed against the passenger-side frontal air bag inflator module: one covers cars whose front passenger air bag assembly had been replaced, where an improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash, and the other warns that an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. Two more are filed under air bags alone, each pointing to the inflator in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag. A fifth recall sits under engine and engine cooling and covers the engine control module on two-wheel-drive cars equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine, a defect NHTSA describes as carrying a variety of warnings and consequences. Two involve aftermarket exterior lighting: replacement combination headlamp assemblies not equipped with amber side reflectors, which leaves the vehicle poorly illuminated, and corner and bumper lamp assemblies whose decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. The last two are label recalls against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims" - a Southeast Toyota campaign where a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash, and a Gulf States Toyota campaign whose labels do not meet the standard requirements. Owners have filed 971 complaints against the 2006 Corolla, and 85 technical service bulletins have been issued for the model.
