Known issues on the 2005 Corolla. Nine recalls have been issued against this vehicle, and five of them involve the front passenger air bag. One covers cars equipped with a front passenger air bag assembly that had been replaced, where an improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash. Two cover inflators where an explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. The other two concern the passenger's frontal air bag inflator in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of that bag. A sixth recall sits under engine and engine cooling and covers the engine control module on cars built with the 1ZZ-FE engine and two-wheel drive, a defect NHTSA describes as carrying a variety of warnings and consequences. The last three are aftermarket lighting recalls. One covers combination headlamp assemblies sold as replacement lamps for passenger vehicles that are not equipped with amber side reflectors; without the amber reflectors the vehicle will be poorly illuminated. The other two cover combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold as aftermarket equipment for passenger vehicles, where decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. Owners have submitted 970 complaints about the 2005 Corolla, and Toyota has issued 105 technical service bulletins for it.
On a car of this age those are the jobs that keep coming back: an engine control module fault traced on a two-wheel-drive car, a passenger air bag inflator that has to be handled to Toyota's own procedure, and lamp assemblies checked against the factory specification after someone has fitted replacements.
