Every 2002 Corolla built for this market ran the same engine: a naturally aspirated 1.8L DOHC four, Toyota’s 1ZZ-FE, fitted to the CE, the LE and the S alike, in automatic and standard-transmission form. One engine across the range means one set of torque values, clearances and service intervals applies whichever 2002 Corolla is on the ramp.

Known issues on the 2002 Corolla. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, and all three are equipment recalls on aftermarket or replacement parts sold for use on passenger vehicles. Two are exterior lighting: combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies of various part numbers, 42,540 of them from DOPE, Inc. and 16,270 from SaberSport, with decreased lighting visibility that may result in a vehicle crash as the consequence on record. The third is suspension: certain front strut mounts branded Gabriel Ride Control or ArvinMeritor, sold as replacement equipment, where the absence of the weld can allow the strut to come out of its mounting position. NHTSA holds 141 owner complaints for the 2002 Corolla, and 52 technical service bulletins have been issued against it.
On a car of this age the work tends to land on those same points — a lighting fault traced back to a replacement lamp assembly, a front strut mount checked after aftermarket parts have gone in, or routine maintenance on the 1.8L four — and each one is a job done to the specification Toyota published for this car in 2002.
