The 4.3L overhead-valve V6 is the only engine, naturally aspirated and gasoline-fueled. Its specifications, torque values and diagnostic sequences form the spine of the book, with the transmission, axles, brakes, steering, suspension, climate control, electrical system and body each documented in their own sections and supported by full wiring diagrams.

Known issues on the 1997 Jimmy. Five recalls attach to this model year. An upper control arm ball joint can separate, which impairs steering or collapses the front suspension. The driver's belt buckle contains an energy-absorbing loop that, if fully deployed in a severe rollover, adds enough slack for a belted driver to be partly or wholly ejected. A short circuit in the outside mirror switch can overheat the driver's door and start a fire there. Owner complaints total 312, led by the service brakes at 53 and suspension at 46. Ball joint replacement, belt anchorage and door wiring are all covered in detail.
