1996 Ford Escort Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1996 Ford Escort lists seven trims, Base, Aust, Equi, GT, LX, Mid and Sport, and two naturally aspirated gasoline engines, the 1.9-liter SOHC inline-four and the 1.8-liter DOHC inline-four. Four bodies are covered: the four-door wagon, the two-door hatchback, the four-door sedan and the four-door hatchback. Each engine gets its own specifications and torque values, and the shared systems, from driveline and suspension to restraints and body electrics, get procedures, wiring diagrams and diagnostics of their own.

Known issues on the 1996 Escort. One recall is on federal record for the 1996 Escort, and it does not concern factory parts: aftermarket corner lamps, turn signals and headlights sold as replacements were built without the amber side reflectors the standard requires, leaving the car poorly marked to other drivers. Owners have filed 248 complaints with NHTSA. Seat belts head the list, followed by engine and cooling and then air bags. Restraint service, lighting circuits and engine diagnostics all have their sections here, with wiring diagrams for the exterior lamps included.
