1984 Ford Escort Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1984 Ford Escort has three engines to account for: the 1.6-liter SOHC inline-four in naturally aspirated form, the same block with a turbocharger, and a 2.0-liter SOHC inline-four diesel. Five trims are listed, Base, GL, GT, GT Turbo and LX, in two-door hatchback, four-door hatchback and four-door wagon bodies. Because the turbocharged and diesel cars differ in fueling, cooling and torque figures, the procedures, specifications, wiring diagrams and diagnostics are kept separate by engine.

Known issues on the 1984 Escort. Three recalls are on federal record. One addresses external cracks above the number three cylinder and split rocker arm cover gaskets that could drip oil onto the exhaust manifold and start an engine compartment fire. A second covers shoulder belt D-ring bolts inadequately supported by the material around them. The third concerns a brake line routed close enough to an engine bracket to be rubbed by normal engine movement. Owners have filed 26 complaints with NHTSA, most on the electrical system, then engine and cooling and seat belts. Wiring, engine sealing and brake line procedures cover that ground.
THE BOLTS THAT ATTACH THE D-SHAPED RING FOR THE SHOULDER BELT ARE INADEQUATELY SUPPORTED BY THE MATERIAL IN WHICH THEY ARE MOUNTED. THE ATTACHMENT DOES NOT COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREM
THE BRAKE LINE MAY BE POSITIONED TOO CLOSE TO AN ENGINE BRACKET. NORMAL ENGINE MOVEMENTS MAY CAUSE THE BRACKET TO RUB AGAINST THE BRAKE LINE.
