1991 Ford Escort Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1991 Ford Escort covers two quite different fours: a 1.8-liter DOHC inline-four and a 1.9-liter SOHC inline-four, both naturally aspirated and gasoline-fueled. Four trims are listed, Base, GT, LX and LX Sport, across two-door hatchback, four-door hatchback and four-door wagon bodies. Valvetrain, timing and fueling differ sharply between the two engines, so the specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics are given separately for each before the shared chassis work begins.

Known issues on the 1991 Escort. Four recalls are on federal record for this year. Roll pins securing the ignition lock in the steering column housing could shift, letting the lock cylinder come loose and the column bind. A front suspension offset toe adjusting pin could fracture under load. A bolt holding a fuel line shield to the dash panel could foul the accelerator pedal and hold the throttle open. And a cracked solder joint at the fuel pump sending unit could vent fuel from a full tank. Owners have filed 393 complaints with NHTSA on the electrical system, seat belts and the fuel system, all covered in detail here.
THE ROLL PINS SECURING THE IGNITION LOCK IN THE STEERING COLUMN HOUSING CAN SEPARATE OR MOVE OUT OF POSITION.
