Known issues on the 1988 Camry. Three recalls sit on federal record. The first covers the front seat belts: releasing the lap belt in a certain manner can cause the belt retractor to lock at the retracted and stowed position, which can leave the belts unusable or discourage occupants from using them. The second covers the front seat heater assembly, where a damaged copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. The third covers the accessory jack: a design defect in the thread profile means the jack may be unable to sustain the vehicle when the wagon is raised, and the jack could lower itself with the potential to cause personal injury. NHTSA lists 88 owner complaints for the year, alongside 7 technical service bulletins.
