The 2009 Camry was built around three different powerplants — the 2.4L four (2AZ-FE), the hybrid version of that same four (2AZ-FXE) and the 3.5L V6 (2GRFE) — and each one carries its own transaxle, cooling and emissions hardware. Torque figures, clearances and diagnostic routines separate them even where the body, interior and chassis are shared, which is why the engine under the hood matters more than the badge on the trunk once work starts.

Known issues on the 2009 Camry. Nine recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two cover the accelerator pedal: on one, the pedal may become hard to depress or slow to return to idle; on the other, a pedal stuck in the open position may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. Two cover power window devices and controls — on the first, the sliding electrical contacts may not be protected by lubricant, and debris and moisture can get in; on the second, if the switch overheats it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire. A frontal air bag recall covers the sensor and control module: the front passenger seat occupant sensing system may be out of calibration. A brake light switch recall notes that inoperative brake lights would not warn other drivers that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Two labeling recalls involve Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, “Tire Selection and Rims” — on the Southeast Toyota recall, a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash; on the Gulf States Toyota recall, the label does not meet the standard requirements. The ninth covers the front seat heater, whose copper strand heating element may short circuit if damaged, increasing the risk of a fire. Owners have filed 1,610 complaints against the 2009 Camry, and 191 technical service bulletins are on record.
