Known issues on the 1988 Prelude. Six recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the accelerator pedal: excessive downward force can bend the pedal stopper, and if the pedal is then caught and held down by the bent stopper, loss of accelerator control can result. The second covers the front seats, where the rear inboard seat anchorage bracket may not withstand the force required by federal safety standards, risking a loose seat. The third covers the front seat belt buckles, whose red plastic release buttons marked "PRESS" can break, with pieces falling into the buckle assembly and causing it to operate improperly. The fourth covers the power steering supply hose, which under vibration and high underhood temperatures can develop a fluid leak at the connector clamp seal, with the risk of fluid contacting the hot exhaust manifold and causing smoke or an underhood fire. The fifth covers the vehicle speed control system, where coolant seepage can leave residue on the throttle valve and slow its return to idle when the accelerator pedal is released. The sixth covers the owner's manual itself, which omitted equipment information required by federal safety standard FMVSS 210. VIBRATION AND HIGH UNDERHOOD TEMPERATURES COULD CAUSE POWER STEERING SUPPLY HOSE AT THE CONNECTOR CLAMP SEAL TO DEVELOP A FLUID LEAK.
Consequence
IF THE FLUID CONTACTS THE HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD, IT MAYCAUSE SMOKE AND POSSIBLY AN UNDERHOOD FIRE.
Remedy
INSTALL AN IMPROVED POWER STEERING SUPPLY HOSE ASSEMBLY.
A SMALL AMOUNT OF COOLANT SEEPAGE MAY OCCUR, AND EVENTUALLY RESIDUE MAY ACCUMULATE ON THE THROTTLE VALVE.
Consequence
RESIDUE MAY CAUSE THROTTLE VALVE RETURN-TO-IDLE SPEED TOBE SLOWER THAN NORMAL WHEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL
Remedy
REPLACE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY.
