This factory service and repair manual for the 1986 GMC C3500 has a wide spread of hardware to account for: five engines and five body configurations. Known issues on the 1986 C3500. One recall touches this model year, and it is an equipment matter: replacement oil filters that may not seal properly, letting engine oil escape and raising a fire risk. NHTSA also holds a single owner complaint, on the tires. Neither points at a deep design fault, so the practical use of the manual lies elsewhere — in the engine, driveline, brake, steering and suspension procedures, and in the lubrication specifications and torque values that keep an oil change from becoming the kind of leak that recall describes.

Consequence
THIS CONDITION MAY CAUSE INADEQUATE SEALING AND LOSS OF ENGINE OIL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
Remedy
HONEYWELL WILL REPLACE THE AFFECTED OIL FILTERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN DURING NOVEMBER 20
